The role of accounting information systems in promoting banking sustainability in the digital transformation environment – ​​an analytical study of a sample of Iraqi commercial banks listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange

Abstract

This research aims to demonstrate the role of accounting information systems in enhancing banking sustainability within the digital transformation environment. This is achieved through an analytical study of a sample of Iraqi commercial banks listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange. Specifically, Al-Taif Islamic Bank, the National Bank of Iraq, and the International Development Bank were selected for the study due to their importance and role in the Iraqi banking sector. To achieve the research objectives, the researchers adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, using a questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. Twenty-four (24) questionnaires were distributed to employees of the banks under study. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was applied to test the research hypotheses and analyze the results to determine the impact of accounting information systems on enhancing banking sustainability in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The research yielded several findings, most notably that the dimensions of accounting information systems—relevance, reliability, and stability—achieved high levels, reflecting the efficiency of these systems in providing accurate and relevant information to support managerial decision-making. The results also showed that the dimensions of digital transformation, particularly cloud computing, the internet, and big data analytics, played a clear role in improving the efficiency of banking operations and the quality of services provided.

The research concluded that Iraqi commercial banks strategy based on developing and modernizing their accounting information systems. This strategy should ensure the enhancement of the systems' key dimensions of relevance, reliability, and stability, and align with the requirements of digital transformation through the expanded use of cloud computing, the internet, and big data analytics. The ultimate goal is to achieve banking sustainability in its economic, social, and environmental dimensionsThe research concluded with the necessity for Iraqi commercial banks listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange to adopt a comprehensive integrated strategy based on developing and updating accounting information systems to ensure the enhancement of their main dimensions of relevance, reliability, and stability, and to align with the requirements of digital transformation through the expansion of the use of cloud computing, the Internet, and big data analytics, with the aim of supporting the efficiency of banking operations, improving the quality of accounting information, and accelerating administrative decision-making, which will positively impact the achievement of banking sustainability in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
